The Zebra v. Lion debate

Today I am sharing a layout I made for Jenni Bowlin Studios.  I used their new digital release, Vintage Mini Animal Deck.  I love this deck and see a lot of uses for it.  We still haven't made it out to the zoo this year but I'm sure we will.  And those zoo pictures pile up.  I'm thinking these would make a sweet mini book too.

Instead of animal pictures though I ended up documenting a new activity for my husband Ryan and our son Avinash.  If you know us, you know that Ryan and I met in college debate.  Well, we were talking about it and Avinash wanted to know what it meant. He immediately latched on to the idea and now wants to have a new one every night.  What topic did he choose that first day? Zebra versus lions.  He quickly came up with points and delivered them in clear bullet point style.  It was so much, though I may have weighted the outcome in his favor by bringing up some of the more vicious habits of lions.  Lol.

I used a sketch from Kelly Purkey for this layout. I started with seven strips of vellum and stitched them down.  Then I arranged the animal cards and photo on top.  I scattered labels around the photo for journaling space (I needed quite a bit).  To add a little contrast to the the neutrals on the page I applied gesso to two opposing corners.  After it dried I applied quite a bit of watercolor and swirled it around for a sort of marbled effect.  Then I added a few more paint splatters before drying the whole thing with my heat gun.
